There is a great void that divides the notions of functional and decorative in the definition of a smoking pipe, as there is a great difference between a smoker and a pure collector. Such pipes as the one presented here may indeed fall under the category of smokable, while in fact their purpose is just as deliberately ornamental and indeed thematic. In this case, the Italian writer and sculptor Andrea Bonazzi (a person whom I’m proud to count as an e-friend on a branded social network) was inspired, as he so often is, by the works of H. P. Lovecraft and its infamously outrageous fictional creature Cthulhu, an otherworldly monster so horrendous and redoubtable it has been known as one of the most powerful incarnations of the sum of all human fears in the context of fiction. Because of his long-held admiration for pipes, Bonazzi decided to carve an homage to his favorite author by decorating an impressive block of briar wood with the head of formidable beast, together with an elegant mouthpiece and a rare silver ring in between also carved, in its turn, with puzzling runes.
To all intents and purposes, this one-of-a-kind work begs to be preserved unsmoked, as its value as a collection item may indeed surpass its utility as an object made to be filled with tobacco and smoked. The admirable and rare pipe whose creation goes back to the year of 2002, is now for sale at ebay and can be purchased for a price no smaller than 799 US dollars. It should come as intensely appealing to a very specific and passionate rank of pipe collectors who revere the masterpieces of the one true maestro of cosmicism.
